Loppers are one of the best tools to cut tree branches. Check out our full review below:
Tree loppers come in different styles of blades. The Hoss Tree Loppers are bypass loppers meaning they have an upper and lower cutting blade that slide past each other like scissors. Bypass loppers were designed to make clean cuts on tree branches so that no damage is done to the tree.
The Hoss tree loppers are a step above simple pruning loppers. They can do well over an 1" of trimming, so they can handle most larger branches.
The blade quality of the Hoss tree loppers is impeccable. The blades are as extremely sharp as they come. Not only that, but the blades were meant to make easy cuts over and over for continuous daily use as if you were a professional tree trimmer.
These Hoss tree loppers are bypass loppers. Bypass loppers like snips are designed for precision cuts as opposed to anvil pruners. Anvil pruners were designed for smashing deadwood branches.
They are great for cutting larger branches for sure but any branches larger than 1.5" might need a larger tool. We measured the diameter the Hoss tree loppers can cut and it's about 1.25".
The Hoss Tree Loppers have forged aluminum handles that are coated in blue coating. They really feel like the bigger brother of the Hoss Pruning Shears but the handles aren't as shiny and rubbery. Nonetheless, the coating enables comfort for prolonged use.
Holding the loppers feels lightweight, and you can tell they are strong and durable so they'll last a lifetime and you can trim all day with them.
The ergonomics are pretty normal for tree loppers. Cutting with the Hoss tree loppers isn't an overly difficult task and it can be done for longer periods, as we have mentioned above. They aren't stiff and don't stick at all so you can cut branches for a long time.
These loppers do come with a bumper to prevent the loppers from cutting well past the intended cut distance. It's a small piece of black and orange plastic located right above the blades in-between the handles.
This is just a nice feature to have that adds to the longevity of the loppers. If the tool didn't have this bumper you might make an over extended cut which could injure you or break the tool.
The Hoss tree loppers don't come with a safety lock but these aren't like pruning shears where your hands are right next to the blade. It would be pretty difficult to have a safety event with these loppers because the blade is about 2 to 3 ft away from you at all times. That being said, be sure not to cut branches directly over your head.
You need to take care of your loppers, no matter what the brand, because the cleanliness and function of the steel alloy blade can impact the health of the plants you plan on pruning. Most gardeners neglect their tools which can pose long term problems for their garden.
The first step is keeping them clean and sterilized. If you neglect this step, you can transfer diseases between trees. Disinfect your trees between use to help stop the spread.
Further, you want to keep your loppers clean so that they can last forever. If you leave your loppers in a dingy spot or a puddle of water or soaking wet, they are sure to rust over. Keep them well oiled and sharp so they can continue to make those precision cuts for years to come. Nothing better than sharpened blades.
Keep the same standards for the Hoss Tree Loppers.
Hoss Tree Loppers are heavy-duty loppers meant to cut larger branches or stems or fruit trees in your yard or on your lot. They are durable and consistent, and even though they were designed for commercial use, they feel like anyone can use them with ease.
The durable design performs consistently and comes in two different sizes, 32 and 36".
Though Hoss is hardly the only brand to launch with the aim of durable tools, we continue to be impressed with the company's dedication to creating durable and lasting products.
But, high-quality materials don't necessarily equate to excellent tools so we wanted to start things off with recommendations for who should consider Hoss tree loppers.
At the end of the day, tree loppers are going to accomplish the task at hand with relative ease, no matter what the pair. The question comes down to do you want a pair that will last long, is ergonomic, and do you want to support a company that makes great products?
Picking the Hoss Tree Loppers is the way to go. Again, they do great over 1", so they are great for pruning fruit trees, or in the vegetable garden, or trimming branches throughout the year. They are sharp, durable and reliable so that you can use them for years to come.
These shears are American made but the price doesn't break the bank. Hoss is known for its high quality garden tools. The shipping was fast and had no delays. If you are a hobbyist gardener or a commercial, we really don't see how you can go wrong choosing this pair. You'll be a very satisfied customer.
At Sweet New Earth we personally review each individual tool. We start by unboxing the package so that you can see how the tool will arrive. Then, we spend time cutting various different items (depending on the tool) to see how it performs in different scenarios.
We test to make sure the tool is ergonomic so that you can see how long you can use the tool during the day. These steps allow us to give a final say on the tool so that you can make the best purchase for your needs.
