Pruning shears come in a different styles of blades. The Hoss pruning shears are bypass pruning shears that have an upper cutting blade that slides past a lower cutting blade much like scissors resulting in a clean cut. They are great for most pruning tasks and are easy to maintain.

The Hoss Pruning shears are a step above simple snips. They can do well up to about 1" of trimming, so they can handle pretty much any branch or stem that needs pruning. 

Blade Quality

The blade quality of the Hoss Pruning shears is incredible. The blades are extremely sharp and they are coated with PFTE so that cleaning and maintenance are easy. Not only that, but the blades come with a sap groove to prevent the dreaded stickiness so common with lesser quality branches. 

These Hoss Pruning Shears are bypass pruners. Bypass pruners and snips are designed for precision cuts as opposed to anvil pruners which are designed for smashing branches. Bypass pruners utilize a springback pruner, see below:

They have a heavy spring that opens the shears when you release your grip. They are great for light to medium-weight pruning. 

The Hoss Pruning Shears have forged aluminum handles that are coated in an orange-red rubber coating. The coating enables comfort for prolonged use and the handles are designed for both lefty or righty (tested it out with my wife as she is a lefty).



Despite all the extra coating, the forged aluminum handles are lightweight, strong and durable so they'll last a lifetime and you can trim all day with them. 

The ergonomics are pretty standard for pruning shears. Cutting with the Hoss Pruning shears isn't an overly difficult task and it can be done for longer periods, as we have mentioned above. Stiffer shears can make your hands cramp over time but so far we haven't had any issues here. 

Bumpers

These shears do come with a bumper to prevent the shears from cutting well past the intended cut distance. It's a small piece of black plastic located right above the spring in between the top and bottom portion of the blade.



This is just a nice feature to have that adds to the longevity of the shears. Plus, you really don't want your blades cutting like a sloppy pair of scissors and these definitely don't do that.

The Hoss Pruning shears come with a safety lock so that you don't have to worry about the blade being exposed. The lock prevents the blade from opening so not only would you have to worry about any safety accidents, but you also could take comfort in knowing the blade wouldn't be exposed to the environment, either.

You don't have to worry about these shears in the toolbox. We hooked and unhooked the safety lock about 50 or 60 times for this review and it doesn't show any signs of slowing down. 

Caring and Maintenance

You need to take care of your pruners, no matter what the brand, because the cleanliness and function of the high-carbon steel blade can impact the health of the plants you plan on pruning. Most gardeners neglect their tools which can pose long-term problems for their gardens.

The first step is keeping the shears clean and sterilized. If you neglect this step, you can transfer diseases between plants. Disinfect your shears between use to help stop the spread.

Further, you want to keep your shears clean so that they can last forever. If you leave your shears in a dingy spot or a puddle of water or soaking wet, they are sure to rust over. Keep them well-oiled and sharp so they can continue to make those precision cuts for years to come. Nothing better than sharpened blades.

• Small-time gardeners who need shears they can rely on that also have great ergonomics to use them longer than the average gardener.
• If you have any sort of yearly harvest or fruit trees or young tree saplings that need proper pruning or trimming without wanting to damage the living portion of the tree.

• If we are being honest, the Hoss Pruning shears are at a comparable price to most of the shears on Amazon and other websites, but they can run a bit expensive. If you are a hobbyist gardener, you really can't go wrong with these.
• If you don't have any fruit trees or vegetable gardens, you may not require such a durable tool. Basically, you don't need these shears if you have nothing to prune. Look into anvil pruning shears if you are planning on doing some deadwood pruning, or you aren't concerned with the smashing effect of the anvil pruners.
• If the branches you need to trim are over 1" thick, then you may want to look into larger shears or even tree loppers. These are great for smaller branches but if you are a professional arborist or someone who needs to prune larger branches on a tree, a bigger tool will be required.
