I want to like this... (and I do)
I want to like this axe, I do! I have used it for almost three hours over two separate sessions. The good points, this axe splits wood! It is sharp and the weight distribution is amazing. After my first 30 min trial run when I got it was fun. I did not want to quit but it got to dark to keep cutting. This axe is everything they say it is. It makes lighter work of the heavy task of splitting rounds 24"-36" in diameter. Now the only bad point for me, a tingling in my left thumb. I noticed it after the first time and just shook it off as getting used to a new axe. No big deal. The second time I used it for over 2 hours. I split a lot of wood. Wearing gloves with it was not workable. It caused a pinching and began to rub a blister on my left thumb. I took the gloves off and kept going as this axe makes splitting wood as much fun as it can be splitting wood. The tingling in my thumb began to grow. It feels like just the last joint in my thumb is asleep. Now two days later the tingling is still there, but dimishing. This is supposed to have shock-absorbing properties in the handle. But, the end of the handle is hollow. It seems like my left thumb bears the brunt of any vibrations coming down the handle. It makes it unusable for me.EDIT:I did not return the axe as I thought I would. I continued to use it and discovered the discomfort came from the gloves I was wearing. I changed to a different pair and the issue went away. This is an AMAZINg axe. I really like it. You can see from the pictures I have split a little bit of wood since I got it. It has kept a very sharp edges. I have not had to sharpen it and it still cuts though oak and hickory like butter. It has great weight distribution. And after changing gloves I can split till my I just run out of time and have a good bit of work to show for it. I like this axe!I have paired it with the 6.5 lb maul. They are a great combo.

As a beginner in the world of wood chopping, I was on the lookout for an axe that wouldn’t be too intimidating or difficult to use. I found exactly what I needed in this splitting axe. Here’s why it’s been great for me:

• Well-Balanced Design: The balance of this axe is remarkable. It’s not too heavy, making it manageable for someone who’s not used to handling such tools. This balance helps in making each swing feel more natural and less tiring, which is really important when you’re just starting out.
• Ease of Use: This axe fits comfortably in the hands, and the grip is secure. I was worried about the axe slipping or being unwieldy, but those fears were unfounded. It’s user-friendly, even for a complete novice like me. Keep in mind I always wear glove when working outside.
• Durability: I’ve been using this axe for a season now, and it’s still as sharp as when I first got it. This durability is a big plus because it means I don’t have to worry about constant maintenance or sharpening, allowing me to focus more on learning the proper techniques.
• Effective on Various Woods: Whether I’ve tackled softwood or hardwood, this axe has performed consistently well. It’s been a great confidence booster to see how effectively it splits different types of wood.

Overall, for any beginners out there looking for their first splitting axe, I can’t recommend this one enough. It’s made my initial foray into wood splitting much less daunting and far more enjoyable.

This review focuses on the aspects that are most relevant and reassuring for someone new to wood splitting, emphasizing the ease of use, balance, and durability of the axe.

I go camping several times a year. We buy a 1/2 rick to a rick of wood each trip. I was using a standard hand axe, I think a Truper michigan axe to split my wood. I also picked up a "kindling cracker". I used the hand axe to get the wood small enough to fit into the kindling cracker (rather than buy the big kc). It worked fine, but, I'm not an accomplished woodman. There were lots of times I needed 2 to 3 strikes to split some of the logs which were halves or quarters of hardwood.
When I got my Fiskars splitting axe, I turned into Paul Bunyan. Not only was almost every split a single stroke, but I did have to widen my "hazard area", as the splits tended to fly to the right and left a good few feet. I can now cut my firewood smaller which saves a lot of money by building exactly the size fire I need. I can cut more kindling using the kindling cracker because it's a simple task to cut the logs small enough to fit inside it's ring; this saves firestarter as I have a lot more starter pieces. It also lets me run very small fires through the night, once i get a bed of coals; i can throw a 2"x2" or 2"x3" piece on to keep giving me light and flame. I also feel this is safer as a non-clean strike can bounce out or sideways.

In summary, 1) this saves a lot of energy, each time I avoid the very hard work of freeing an axe from a partially split log is probably equal to the work of splitting 2 or 3 more logs with this axe. 2) this saves a lot of energy, as it feels like the Axe does the work, not me...the tool is well balanced with a pretty fast head and good leverage to split the log, 3) this saves money allowing me to size my fires exactly the way i want, 4) this saves money in firestarter, my favorite is a couple pieces of fatwood, which is all i need with the kindling i can create 5) I personally feel it's safer 6) it's good for my ego; I'm a 64 yr old 5'10" guy and this is VERY easy for me to use effectively; when a pair of splits fly to each side of the camp site, it's a good feeling.

Note: when i go to the lumberyard, it's a "load your own", so i always pay for my rick and give them a couple of bucks for one "round" to use as a chopping block. When i first used this axe at the campsite, I was able to split the round and burn it rather than leave it.

Someone else mentioned that this thing splits like butter. I'll echo that sentiment. The blade is shaped just right to quickly penetrate the wood and create a split. The outer coating of a teflon-like substance means that the force of you blow will be transferred into lateral force, pushing the two halves of the split apart. The blade is very sharp. Not quite razor sharp, but it would slice you open if you let it.

I was able to split 20" rounds of wet maple with ease. Anything larger than 14" needed at least 2 whacks to make the initial split, but two to four shots in the same area usually did the trick. Larger than 20" still requires a sledge and wedge for the initial split.

After an hour of splitting with the Fiskars, I switched back to my old 8 pound maul for a few whacks. I noticed right away that although it weighed almost twice as much (and my back and hands noticed that immediately), the larger maul split no better. I'm never using the pointy end of my maul again (i use the blunt side for wedges).

For reference, I split wood with the 8 pound maul 2 weekends ago. I split about 10 rounds before tiring (I'm not in great shape). Using the Fiskars, I split 25+ rounds before tiring.

If you're splitting on hardscape or rocks, I would recommend either setting up on another round, or figuring out another way to keep the axe from hitting the ground when you don't expect it. Otherwise it will, an you'll lose your factory edge.

I split multiple rounds together, which means that often on smaller splits, the Fiskars would go quickly through the small piece, and the handle would bash on some other piece of wood. The light weight of the Fiskars meant that the shock of stopping the blade with the handle was minimal, and even after 40 or 50 such strikes, there was no noticeable damage to the handle. I'll keep an eye on it, but so far so good.

Advantages:
Light weight, but splits as well as a heavier maul.
Tough handle stands up well to damage (so far)
Very well designed product.
Very sharp

Disadvantages:
Short handle - I noticed it, but after a few whacks it didn't bother me (I'm 6'-1). Bend your knees, spread your legs, and keep your hands low to ensure that the axe head is moving downward at impact, rather than angling towards your legs.
Gripping wood - when splitting medium sized rounds, i would occasionally strike hard enough to get the axe head stuck, but not tough enough to split the wood. Generally wigglin the end of the handle would un stick it, but occasionally i had to put a foot on the round to get the head out. This never happens with a splitting maul, but the trade off is worth it IMO.
It's not so powerful that it replaces the sledge & wedge - Larger than 20" rounds may still require some good old fashioned sledgehammering (depending on species & condition).
